Estranged husband fatally shot while threatening wife at gas station, OK cops say

An Oklahoma man has died days after being shot at a gas station while threatening his wife, Tulsa police told news outlets.

The woman was with a group of friends on the evening of Monday, July 1, when her estranged husband approached them, while armed with a gun, at a QuikTrip gas station, police told KOTV.

A court had ordered 45-year-old Daniel Matute to stay away from his wife, KOKI reported, but police said that didn’t stop him from walking right up to her and her group.

It’s not clear exactly what was said during the confrontation, but as things escalated, Matute soon discovered he wasn’t the only person with a gun, police told the station.

Investigators said a friend of the woman pulled out a firearm and told Matute to drop his, KOTV reported. Instead of backing down, he tried to aim at the friend, who police said then opened fire, hitting Matute twice.

Police responded to the scene, and Matute was taken to a hospital for treatment. He died five days later, on Saturday, July 6, KTUL reported.

As of July 9, no arrests have been made, police told the station, adding that once the investigation concludes, the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office will decide what charges, if any, will be filed.
