Senior pup desperate for new home after owner dies. ‘She doesn’t know why she’s here’
A shelter in Wisconsin is begging the public on behalf of a senior pup who is depressed as she finds herself in an unknown place.
Oshkosh Area Humane Society introduced Katherine to the world in a June 26 Facebook post.
“Katherine is bewildered. She doesn’t know why she’s here,” the post sadly stated of the mixed-breed dog.
“We wish we could explain to her that her person passed away, and the relative who tried to give her a home already had a dog that Katherine wasn’t comfortable with. They were out of options so she came to OAHS.”
The 12-year-old’s adoption page says she’s a well-behaved hound who is “sweet, outgoing, good with people” and is a gentle soul.
The post says Katherine is “stressed and sad,” and the shelter has encouraged a foster or adopter to get her into a new home.
“She would like to be your only pet please as we don’t want her stressed in her elder chapter of life,” the shelter said. “She also would do best in a quiet home with older children. She just wants someone to pet her, let her sniff outside, and give her tasty food and treats. We don’t think that’s too much to ask, do you?”
Studies have been done on whether or not dogs can sense death, and while results vary, it’s noted that a pet will change in attitude upon noticing the absence of a human.
“For example, if one of your other dogs dies or a beloved owner passes away, your dog may well be confused or distressed, wondering why things have changed,” the American Kennel Club details.
People in the comment section of the humane society’s post were immediately moved by Katherine’s story and some asked how they could help.
“Whoever takes her, please inform them her human’s name so they can keep telling her how much they loved her and they know she misses them. Dogs are very smart and grieve miserably,” one person commented.
“Awwww, poor baby...if I didn’t have 3 cat’s she’d have a home in a heartbeat,” someone replied.
“Love you Katherine. I hope someone with a big heart welcomes you into their home. Life is tough enough the way it is—-not to mention being an older girl,” another comment.
The shelter is located in Oshkosh, about a 50-mile drive southwest from Green Bay.
