12-year-old found dead in creek hours after she left her house, Texas cops say
Texas officials say they “won’t rest” until they find out how a 12-year-old girl ended up dead in a creek.
A person found the girl’s body in shallow water in Houston around 6 a.m. on June 17, Lt. Stephen Hope said during a news conference. The girl may have left her home sometimes after 10 p.m. the night before without her family’s knowledge, Hope said.
“Someone has taken one of our innocent children,” Houston Police Chief Larry Satterwhite said. “We believe someone did this horrible thing to her, and we are here to ask for your help.”
Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to her death, Hope said, but they are also asking for the public to call with any information. The case is being investigated as a homicide.
Hope would not comment on the nature of the girl’s body when she was found.
Officials did not publicly identify the girl, though the family has been notified, Hope said.
“It’s just unmanageable what the family is going through,” Houston Mayor John Whitmire said.
