Man swimming in lake with friend drowns as boat drifts out of reach, CA cops say
A man drowned as he swam in a lake with his friend and their boat drifted away, California deputies say.
The man, who was not identified but described as being in his 30s, was swimming in Lake Siskiyou the evening of June 12, the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release shared to Facebook.
Witnesses told deputies the man was swimming with a friend around a boat when it drifted out of reach.
The man began to struggle in the water and vanished from sight, deputies said.
After arriving at about 7 p.m. that evening, the sheriff’s office said deputies began to search the North Shore boat launch area while a sergeant prepped a rescue boat.
The search, which included the help of the sheriff’s office dive team and members of the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, continued into the following day, according to deputies.
Shortly before 3 p.m., the man’s body was found in the lake about 49 feet underwater, deputies said.
An investigation into the “tragic incident” is ongoing, the sheriff’s office said.
Siskiyou County is about a 260-mile drive north from Sacramento.
