12-year-old boy riding bike is hit and killed by accused drunk driver, Ohio cops say
A 12-year-old boy riding his bike died two days after being hit by an accused drunk driver in a pickup truck, Ohio authorities said.
Tye David Miezejewski, of Sullivan Township, was riding his bike on a two-lane county road around 3:40 p.m. on May 24 when he was struck by a Chevrolet Silverado, according to a May 27 news release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The boy was flown by medical helicopter to Akron Children’s Hospital where he died on May 26 from his injuries, police said.
He was on his way to a friend’s house when he was hit, WJW reported.
“Tye fought hard for us but God needed him,” the boy’s family said in a GoFundMe. “Our beautiful boy got taken from us way too soon.”
The driver, 55-year-old James Dwayne Taylor, of Ashland, stayed at the scene and was arrested on a charge of operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, police said.
Taylor was charged on May 28 with aggravated vehicular homicide, according to Ashland County court records. Additional charges are pending, according to the highway patrol.
McClatchy News was unable to locate attorney information for Taylor.
Officials said the crash is under investigation.
Sullivan Township is about a 45-mile drive west from Akron.
