A South Dakota woman was sentenced to two years probation after authorities say she paid a teenager to assault a 12-year-old girl.

On April 1, 2023, a 14-year-old girl showed her aunt a photo of her aunt’s husband kissing a 12-year-old girl, according to a May 24 news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Dakota.

The woman then told the 14-year-old that she would pay her to beat up the 12-year-old, officials said.

“Later that day, the niece and several other individuals broke into the 12-year-old’s home, woke her up and assaulted her,” officials said.

The niece showed the woman a video of the assault, and the woman then paid her niece $20, according to authorities.

The 12-year-old girl suffered minor injuries.

In October, the 26-year-old woman pleaded guilty to a charge of child abuse.

McClatchy News is not naming the woman in order to protect the identity of her underage niece.
