Blind cat with heart ‘full of love’ found ‘suffering and alone.’ Now, he needs a home
This blind cat with a heart “full of love” is ready for someone “to be his guide,” a Texas shelter said.
“Meet Hardaway! This special little guy may not have his sight, but he’s got a vision for a loving forever home,” the Gulf Coast Humane Society said in a May 22 Facebook post introducing a cat that has been in its care for over two months.
“Picture him snuggling on your lap, trusting you completely to be his guide,” the group said.
Hardaway, believed to be around 7 years old, was found alone on the streets and suffering from serious injuries that required the removal of both of his eyes, the group said.
He was also diagnosed with feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus, both lifelong conditions.
“Although these may sound scary, with a little extra care, Hardaway can still live a happy and fulfilling life,” the group said.
Despite this “little warrior’s” health challenges, he “still purrs louder than any other cat in the shelter,” the group said. “Hardaway’s heart is full of love to give!”
Because FeLV and FIV are contagious to other cats, Hardaway is looking for a home where he would be the only feline in the house. These conditions are not infectious to any other species.
Caring for a cat like Hardaway requires keeping up with regular vet checkups and watching for any signs that there may be a problem related to these conditions, according to Jackie McCollough, director of marketing at the Gulf Coast Humane Society.
“He’s super sweet and very loving,” McCollough said. “He’s just a really great calm cat.”
Hardaway initially came from Portland Animal Care Services, a shelter the Gulf Coast Humane Society has been mentoring through the Best Friends Shelter Collaborative to achieve a “no-kill” status by implementing new programs, practices and protocols, McCollough said in an email.
Portland achieved a no-kill status in December and is continuing to improve its no-kill practices, according to McCollough.
“Hardaway is the perfect example of how each individual animal’s life can make a difference,” McCollough said.
