Innocent man spent 31 days in jail because woman lied about rape attempt, officials say
Pennsylvania officials have charged a woman after they say she lied about an attempted rape and kidnapping.
Anjela Borisova Urumova, 20, was charged on Monday, May 20, with false alarm to an agency of public safety, tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, false reports and unsworn falsification to authorities, according to a news release from the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office.
According to officials, on April 16, Urumova reported to law enforcement that a man in the parking lot of a Redner’s grocery store in Middletown Township tried to rape and kidnap her.
Urumova described the man to police, and after further investigating, officers located a man who fit the description. Urumova told police that he attacked her, officials said.
The man was arrested and charged with multiple felonies.
However, after further investigation, officials found inconsistencies in Urumova’s story.
Officers reviewed surveillance footage from retailers in the area where Urumova said the attack happened, and they also did a forensic review of her phone.
When authorities confronted Urumova, she admitted to lying about the attack and said no assault occurred, according to officials. She said she targeted the man because she had seen him and his truck in the past, officials said.
The man was released and charges against him were dropped after spending 31 days in jail.
Urumova was arraigned and given a $30,000 bail. An attorney for Urumova was not listed in court records.
Middletown Township is about 25 miles northeast of Philadelphia.
