23-year-old found in crashed car died from rock thrown through windshield, NC cops say

A 23-year-old woman who crashed into a home was killed by a rock thrown through her windshield, North Carolina authorities said.

Friends and family are now mourning the loss of Brittany Ferguson.

Ferguson was driving in Burke County shortly before 9 p.m. May 15 when a rock flew through her windshield and struck her in the head, according to a news release from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

She veered off the road and crashed into a home, and she died at the scene from the head injury, officials said.

Witnesses to the crash said they saw a white Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck circling the area after the crash, with someone riding in the bed, according to Highway Patrol.

Investigators, along with those who knew Ferguson, are asking the public for help identifying the people in the truck.

“We need justice for Brittany,” a loved one wrote on Facebook.

Those searching for answers put up homemade signs near the crash site seeking information and asking neighbors to check home surveillance cameras.

“My heart is broken,” the loved one continued. “I love you baby girl and you will be missed so much. You have always been like one of my own. It just doesn’t seem real that you’re gone.”

The NC State Highway Patrol is asking anyone with information to contact 828-466-5500. State troopers didn’t have any updates as of May 17.

“She was a wonderful soul and will be missed dearly,” her godmother wrote on Facebook.

Morganton is about a 75-mile drive northwest from Charlotte.
