The father of a 5-year-old girl was arrested after police said officers responded to a report of the child unconscious and “not breathing” inside a central New York home.

The girl was pronounced dead at the Schenectady residence April 14, the Schenectady Police Department said in an April 15 news release. Officers and paramedics had been dispatched to the home at about 3 a.m. before they arrived that morning, according to police.

Her father is accused of not giving the girl food or water from April 10 to April 14, leading to her starvation death, according to court documents, WRGB and other news outlets reported.

The 33-year-old is charged with second-degree manslaughter and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, police said. McClatchy News is not identifying the suspect to protect the identity of the minors involved.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges at an arraignment April 15, court records show.

One of the child endangerment charges relates to a 3-year-old child inside the home where his daughter died, according to court documents, the Times Union reported.

The Schenectady County Public Defender’s Office, which is representing the man, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment from McClatchy News on April 15.

It’s unclear who made the report about the 5-year-old that resulted in the police response early April 14.

The Schenectady Police Department’s Youth Aide Bureau continues to investigate the girl’s death, police said.

The father is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on April 19, records show.

McClatchy News requested documents related to the arrest from the Schenectady Police Department on April 15 and didn’t receive an immediate response.

Schenectady is about a 20-mile drive northwest from Albany.
