Dog found cold and hungry near Washington Taco Bell. Now she’s getting a special job
Dame, a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois, was found cold and hungry near a Taco Bell in northwest Washington.
But, before long, her rescue in Silverdale turned out to be the first step toward her new career.
She was brought into the Kitsap Humane Society in December, but the rescue knew it would be hard to find her the right home, the group said in an April 9 Facebook post.
When Dame was in the shelter, she suffered from severe kennel stress, panted heavily, refused all treats and was difficult to walk, the rescue said.
“By all accounts, she was going to be a tough dog to place in a home,” the nonprofit said.
Because of this, the rescue helped her find a special job.
Dame works with DEA officer
The behavior staff at the rescue knew she just needed to be in the right environment, so they contacted the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.
A deputy met with Dame and said she “was just what they were looking for,” the rescue said.
The Seattle Region Drug Enforcement Agency then decided Dame would work with a DEA task force officer, the animal rescue said.
She started training in February to learn how to detect contraband, animal shelter spokesperson Michael “Mike” Bush told McClatchy News.
Bush said her training should be done in about six months.
“I’m glad that KHS sought out the resources available and properly placed this smart, beautiful girl in the right environment where she will be happy, well taken care of and loved,” one person commented on Facebook.
“Lucky Dame! Way to go. Good luck on her new adventures. What a lucky outcome!” another person wrote.
