16-year-old girl with ‘sweet, free spirit’ dies in car crash, South Carolina cops say
A 16-year-old honor student died and two others were injured when the car they were in crashed into a tree, South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
Taylor Madison Britt died in the crash Sept. 30, WPDE reported. The Darlington County coroner pronounced her dead on the scene, the station said.
Two passengers in her car, a 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLK350, were taken to a hospital, according to highway patrol.
South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, which occurred near Darlington, a state trooper said.
“Taylor had a sweet, free spirit,” her family wrote in her obituary. “She was outgoing, smart, talented, and forever more beautiful.”
Britt was a student at Darlington High School.
“It is with tremendous sadness that we share the passing of a Darlington High School student, Taylor Britt, over the weekend,” a spokesperson for the Darlington County School District said in a statement shared with McClatchy News. “We offer our sincerest condolences and prayers to Taylor’s family and friends.”
School is not in session for fall break, but counselors will be available for students when classes resume, the spokesperson said.
Britt’s family described her as an honor student in the early college program who loved to sing and eat macaroni and cheese.
“A simple paragraph cannot sum of the life of this wonderful child,” her obituary says. “Simply put, she was a great person in every way, shape, and form.”
A former teacher mourned her loss on social media.
“She was definitely someone you would want to be around, she brightened up everyone’s day,” the teacher wrote. “Had such a bright future. Praying for the family, friends, and all her classmates and students at DHigh. This isn’t fair.”
Another teacher asked the community for support, saying “our hearts are breaking.”
Darlington is about 80 miles northeast of Columbia.
