As many as 48,000 Novaform mattresses have been recalled after reports of mold, safety officials said.

The mattresses included in the recall — Novaform ComfortGrande 14-inch and Novaform DreamAway 8-inch — were sold exclusively through Costco, according to a Sept. 21 news release from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Officials said the mattresses were potentially exposed to water during their manufacturing at a San Bernardino, California, facility, according to the release.

The water may cause mold to develop inside the mattresses, posing a health risk to those with immune deficiencies, lung or breathing problems, or mold allergies, officials said.

The company has received 541 reports of mold in the mattresses, but no injuries or illness have been reported, the commission said.

The mattresses were sold in-store at Costco locations throughout northwestern states and in the San Francisco area, according to the release. They were also sold nationally online.

Included in the recall are just shy of 50,000 mattresses sold between January and June, according to the release.

The ComfortGrande 14-inch mattress has “Novaform” printed in white letters on a blue base, and the DreamAway 8-inch mattress has “Novaform” printed in white letters on a gray base, the company says.

The 14-inch mattress recall includes two different king-size options, two queen-size options, and the California king, twin and full-size mattresses, according to the release.

The 8-inch mattress recall includes two twin and two full-size mattresses.

Anyone who has purchased one of the recalled mattresses may bring the mattress back to Costco for a full refund or a replacement mattress, and they will receive free delivery of a new mattress and free pick up and disposal of the recalled mattress.

Costco is contacting those known to have purchased the mattress directly about their options, the release said.
