Two rescued by helicopter after 18-year-old stranded on island, Oregon officials say
A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter rescued an 18-year-old man who became stuck on Proposal Rock and a bystander who tried to help off the Oregon coast, officials reported.
The rescues took place on the evening of Saturday, July 8, at the island off Neskowin Beach about 30 miles south of Tillamook, the Coast Guard said in a series of Twitter posts.
A Coast Guard helicopter based in Newport rescued an 18-year-old man who had become stranded on the rock with abrasions to his hands, officials said.
The helicopter also rescued a bystander on shore who had entered the water to try to help the stranded 18-year-old, the Coast Guard said.
The 18-year-old was turned over to emergency crews in stable condition, the release said.
Proposal Rock is an imposing island just off the beach that “seems to radiate a sense of magic,” The Oregonian reported. It gained its name after a couple became engaged to marry on it.
Tillamook is about 70 miles west of Portland.
