Mama dog and newborn puppies found trapped under abandoned SC building. See the rescue
A mama dog and her newborn puppies were found trapped under an abandoned building — then rescuers rushed in, South Carolina photos show.
An animal control officer discovered that the animals had gotten wedged beneath an old workshop and called for help, City of Marion Fire and Rescue Chief Kevin Hammond told McClatchy News in a phone interview. A picture shared on social media shows the mother’s eyes peeking out from the precarious spot, located in a backyard.
The department said it responded and helped to pull the mom and her puppies to safety. Unfortunately, one of the four puppies didn’t survive, Engineer James Blanchett told McClatchy News in a phone interview.
Firefighters reported the rescue at about 9 a.m. on Monday, June 12. After getting to the mother and her babies, firefighters shared a photo on social media that showed one of the tiny creatures pups that was freed.
“They looked like they had been born pretty recently (because) they were just the size of the palm of my hand,” Blanchett said.
The fire department said it wasn’t sure how the rest of the litter of puppies would have fared, since their mother was stuck on top of them.
The mom showed signs she didn’t want to be pulled from under the building, and the surviving puppies were whining but seemed OK physically. The dogs were left with animal control, according to officials.
Marion is roughly 45 miles northwest of Myrtle Beach.
