Two found dead in ditch were hit by accused drunk driver, Washington cops say
Two people were found dead in a ditch near the side of a road after being struck by a suspected drunk driver in Washington, deputies said.
A witness reported finding a woman’s body at about 11:45 p.m. April 29 in Spokane County, the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.
First responders found the bodies of a man and woman, deputies said.
Additionally, there were tire marks near the bodies, vehicle crash debris and a Washington license plate, deputies said.
Authorities determined the driver left the roadway during a slight curve.
“(The driver) was unable to negotiate the curve, left the road and struck the two pedestrian victims, either in the ditch or along the edge of the roadway and continued, striking several fence posts before coming to a stop,” deputies said.
The driver fled the scene, deputies said.
Someone then reported seeing a pickup truck in a ditch about a half-mile away, deputies said.
Deputies responded to the area and said they found a 29-year-old woman in a vehicle with “front-end damage” who they suspected was under the influence of alcohol.
Her vehicle also had damage that was “consistent with the known collision information” and the same license plate as the one that was left at the crash scene, deputies said.
She was arrested and charged with two counts of vehicular homicide and two counts of hit-and-run. Authorities also took samples of her blood for testing.
Spokane County is in eastern Washington.
