Stunned SC lottery winner asks her dad for second opinion — then wants a third
A lottery player asked her dad about her winning scratch-off ticket — then wanted a third opinion.
The woman showed the ticket to her husband “to be sure” that she hit the jackpot, the S.C. Education Lottery wrote March 16 in a news release.
It turns out, her relatives’ opinions were spot-on, and the woman’s ticket was worth $100,000.
The winner was left in disbelief about the big prize after a trip to Quick Stop in Latta, roughly 75 miles northwest of Myrtle Beach. While at the Dillon County store, officials said she spent $3 on a scratch-off ticket for the Lady Jumbo Bucks Crossword game.
When the woman first thought she scored a prize, she had her dad count the number of words that appeared on the crossword-style ticket, according to the S.C. Education Lottery.
“It looks right to me,” he said.
But then, the woman asked her husband to help her confirm the total number of words on the ticket. That’s when she was “pretty sure” she beat 1-in-600,000 odds to win the game’s top prize of $100,000, officials said.
The woman, who wasn’t identified in the news release, kept $69,500 after taxes, lottery spokesperson Holli Armstrong told McClatchy News in an email.
It’s not the first time a spouse has given a lucky lottery ticket another look. Recently, a South Carolina man thought he won $12 before he and his wife determined he was getting much richer, McClatchy News reported.
