As officers in Illinois looked for the owner of a dog abandoned at a Burger King, they soon realized the heartbreaking story of why the dog was left behind.

Police in Monee, a southern suburb of Chicago, said their hearts were broken when a resident found the dog on Monday, Feb. 27. According to the South Suburban Humane Society, he had been tied outside a Burger King restaurant.

The “sweet doggy” had a note attached to his collar that read, “I’m King. I’m a good boy. Love to hug & kiss.”

And police agreed, saying in a Facebook post that “he really does love to hug and kiss you too.”

Officers searched for King’s owner, and she came forward with her reasoning for why the dog was abandoned.

“After suffering a major medical event, she had moved in with family and has been trying to get back on her feet,” the humane society said. “Her family member abandoned King without her knowledge and she is devastated.”

The humane society and police decided that it was best for King to be with his owner, so a shelter worker agreed to foster the dog until his owner has a better living situation.

If that is unable to happen in a month, King will be placed for adoption, police said.

“The love between them was very evident,” police said of King and his owner.

“Every single day, every one of us has a choice to choose empathy and kindness,” the humane society added. “SSHS is grounded in both and we choose kindness whenever possible.”
