Crash into frozen river in morning fog kills 17-year-old driver, Utah sheriff says

A crash into a frozen Utah river in early morning fog killed a 17-year-old driver, sheriff’s officials reported.

Rescuers found a car upside-down in the icy Bear River near Corinne at 3:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release. They found the driver dead inside.

Investigators believe the driver missed a turn at a T-intersection almost nine hours earlier, at 6:30 a.m., and drove off the road into the river, the release said.

“It was reported that there was dense fog in the area at that time, which likely contributed to the cause of the crash,” sheriff’s officials said.

The sheriff’s office did not release the 17-year-old’s name.

Corinne is a community of 830 people about 60 miles north of Salt Lake City.
