A dad was found shot dead behind the wheel of an SUV with his toddler daughter on a California freeway, officials said.

Officers found the man and his 3-year-old after responding to a report about a freeway traffic collision in Stockton on the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 1, California Highway Patrol said in a news release posted on Facebook.

The 41-year-old Lathrop man had been shot once, according to CHP. Despite “life saving measures,” the driver died on scene. His identity has not been released.

The toddler was not harmed and “returned home to her family,” CHP said.

“We want to assure the public that these acts of violence are not random but often targeted attacks between parties that know each other,” CHP Capt. Mel Hutsell said in the release.

CHP said it has not identified a vehicle or suspect, and anyone with information about the freeway shooting is asked to contact CHP at 916-731-6580.

Stockton is about 50 miles south of Sacramento.
