16-year-old dies after another teen loses control of SUV near Georgia school, cops say
A teenager died after a young driver crashed an SUV near a Georgia high school, officials said.
The teen was riding in the SUV when it approached a curve. The SUV then hit a curb, causing the driver to over-correct and lose control, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.
“The vehicle began to roll and as it did the passenger side struck (an) electrical pole,” deputies wrote Nov. 1 in a news release.
The 16-year-old — who wasn’t identified in the news release — died at the scene of the crash.
The 17-year-old driver was left with minor injuries, according to officials.
Deputies were called at about 8 a.m. to Mullinax Road. A school traffic officer responded minutes after the crash, which WSB-TV reported was across from the sign to Denmark High School in Alpharetta, outside of Atlanta.
The deceased student didn’t attend Denmark High School but instead was enrolled at Alliance Academy for Innovation, roughly 10 miles to the northeast, officials said.
“It’s a horrible tragedy,” Sheriff Ron Freeman told Forsyth County News. “We’ve lost a student.”
Both Denmark High School and Alliance Academy are within the Forsyth County school district, which told McClatchy News in an email that it planned to have extra counselors at the deceased student’s campus on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2.
An investigation into the crash continues.
