House with ‘Mad Men’ vibes in ‘swanky’ KC suburb intrigues Zillow Gone Wild. See why
A unique house for sale in the Kansas City suburbs has managed to capture the intrigue of a popular real estate social media page known primarily for its snark.
Located in Prairie Village, “The Searing House” comes with a $975,000 price tag — most likely because it was designed by famous architect Bruce Goff, who was primarily known for his eccentric houses. The 1,515-square-foot, one-bedroom, two-bathroom residence “blends minimalism, whimsical features and feeling of being in nature,” in one sophisticated package, the listing on Sotheby’s International Realty says.
Features include:
An abundance of windows
Skylights
Fireplace
Deck
“From the wood dividing doors that meld into one another to enlarge or shrink the space, to the central fireplace, Goff was a true architectural genius when he designed the home,” the listing says.
This is the first time the house has been on the market since it was built in 1967.
Fans on Facebook’s Zillow Gone Wild likened the residence to AMC’s award-winning series “Mad Men” series thanks to its classic appeal. Others weren’t impressed by the small square footage and high cost.
“The interior of this home is giving major ‘Mad Men’ vibes,” one person said. “I like to think Don Draper’s secret Kansas family from that Lucky Strike account business trip lived here.”
“This much for a house in Kansas? What am I missing? Is this some high priced suburb of KC?” another asked. “EDIT: Swanky suburb of KC and built by well known architect Bruce Goff. I guess I get it now?”
“It’s by a famous architect which is why is so expensive,” someone pointed out. “Some of my dad’s old friends knew the family and used to hang out there. It looks like it hasn’t changed much at all.”
“1970s called, they want their $12,000 house back,” one person joked.
“I love how everyone thinks this is in the middle of nowhere, this is one of the wealthier suburbs of Kansas City,” someone said. “Yeah it’s not LA, but my God it’s not in a cornfield.”
“One bedroom for almost a mil?” another asked.
“Oh my gosh, the inside is amazing. Love that setup,” one person said.
The listing is held by Katherine Lee with Sotheby’s International Realty.
Prairie Village is about 10 miles south of downtown Kansas City, Missouri.
