A firefighter and father of two twins died suddenly in Georgia, leaving his family, friends and community in mourning.

The Newnan Fire Department shared the news of 44-year-old Damien Sorrells’ death on Oct. 11.

“Firefighter Sorrells loved the fire service and possessed the biggest servant’s heart you could ever find. It has been an honor to work beside Firefighter Sorrells and he will be greatly missed,” the fire department wrote on Facebook. “On behalf of the Newnan Fire Department we send our deepest condolences to the Sorrells family.”

The fire department did not specify Sorrells’ cause of death.

Other departments shared their condolences, including the Coweta County Fire Rescue Peer Support Team, which called Sorrells “one of the most sincere servant leaders you would ever meet,” and said his death would leave “a huge hole in many hearts.”

Sorrell’s Facebook reflected his love of working as a firefighter, along with his family and two twin children.

“He was one of the good guys,” Tova Reeder, a family friend, wrote on Facebook. “Always the life of the party. He loved his wife, family and friends and never met a stranger. Proudly serving as a firefighter and a die hard Bulldogs fan.”

“You were a pure joy to be around,” a fellow firefighter Josh Teal wrote in Sorrells’ memory. “You were dedicated to our profession and loved with a huge heart.”

Newnan is about 40 miles southwest of Atlanta.
