A hunter was setting up his tree stand when it started to fall over and sent him plummeting to the ground, New Hampshire officials said.

Casey Barry, a 58-year-old from Goffstown, was hunting Sunday, Sept. 18 when he fell out of a tree, New Hampshire Fish and Game said.

“Barry began ascending the tree stand after securing the lower straps and the stand shifted and began to fall over,” officials said in a news release.

The hunter called a friend for help after he fell, officials said. The friend then called 911, and officials rushed to the scene.

Rescuers assisted Barry out of the woods and took him to a medical center in Manchester.

The hunter had serious injuries, but they were not life-threatening.

Fish and Game said the incident serves as a reminder for hunters to use safe practices when setting up and removing their tree stands.

“Most tree stand accidents can be avoided by using the buddy system to put up and remove treestands, as well as by utilizing a safety harness while hunting,” officials said.
