88-year-old crashes car through Trader Joe’s, injuring 8, California officials say
A car plunged through a California Trader Joe’s, injuring eight people, including one child, according to media reports.
An 88-year-old Hayward man was behind the wheel of a gray Toyota Avalon when it plowed through the Castro Valley store shortly before 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15, FOX News reported.
Photos from the Alameda County Fire Department show the wrecked car parked near the back of the store among damaged checkout stands.
“Crews are currently assessing the building for hazards and injured persons,” the department said on Facebook.
California Highway Patrol did not immediately return McClatchy News’ request for comment on Sept. 16.
Among the eight people hurt with “mild to moderate” injuries, four, including a 5-year-old, were taken to the hospital, KRON reported.
CHP Officer Dan Jacowitz told NBC Bay Area that he does not think the man intentionally drove through the store or that “drugs or alcohol played a role.”
The driver, who was unharmed, is cooperating with authorities, according to the outlet.
Castro Valley is about 25 miles southeast of San Francisco.
