Child calls 911 from daycare while man holds his wife hostage inside, Oregon cops say
A man who deputies say held his wife hostage for hours inside a Springfield home daycare died after being shot by deputies, Oregon sheriff’s officials reported.
A child called 911 at 3:52 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, to report his stepfather had attacked his mother at the home, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
Deputies evacuated seven children ages 1 to 11 from the home but discovered the man had barricaded himself in the basement with his wife, the release said.
At 4:20 p.m., deputies heard the man say he had a gun and planned to kill the woman, sheriff’s officials said. Crisis negotiators spent several hours talking to the man.
At 9:31 p.m., deputies reported hearing shots and two deputies shot the man, who later died despite efforts to revive him, the release said.
The woman was taken to a hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to her abdomen, sheriff’s officials reported.
The deputies who shot the man have been placed on paid leave for an investigation, which is routine in police shootings, the sheriff’s office said.
Springfield is a city of 62,000 about 110 miles south of Portland.
