A woman clung to her car door as a man drove off in her vehicle with her 1-year-old inside of it, Oregon authorities said.

The woman had left her car running at a Chevron gas station around 10:45 a.m. on Aug. 12 in Shady Cove, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

She was a few feet from the car when she watched a man get into the driver’s side door, deputies said.

She pleaded with him to stop so she could get her child then clung to the outside of the car door as he drove from the gas station and onto Oregon Route 62, deputies said.

She fought with the man and got him to stop in the middle of the highway, deputies said.

The man fled and was found hiding under a tarp, authorities said.

The 33-year-old man from Bend was arrested on multiple charges, including second-degree kidnapping, two counts of recklessly endangering, first-degree robbery, second-degree disorderly conduct and harassment.

Shady Cove is about 150 miles southeast of Eugene.
