4-year-old killed on highway after wandering away at night, Indiana cops say
A 4-year-old died after being hit by a car when he wandered out at night, Indiana authorities said.
The toddler and his mom were in Newburgh, Indiana, visiting the mother’s boyfriend and staying at a business just off Highway 66 near Lincoln Avenue, the Warrick County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
About 4 a.m. local time Monday, Aug. 8, the child wandered out and into the highway, officials said.
A vehicle headed west fatally struck the child, the sheriff said.
Authorities identified the child as Braxton Freeze of Princeton, Indiana.
The driver called 911, the news release said. According to WIKY, he immediately started CPR on the child and continued until authorities arrived.
The mom woke up to find her son missing, according to WIKY.
Authorities told 14 News the driver did not see the child and drugs or alcohol are not considered factors.
Newburgh is about 165 miles southwest of Indianapolis and on the Indiana-Kentucky border.
