A school bus driver was killed when the bus he was driving crashed with three elementary school students on board, Georgia officials said.

The bus was heading north when it side-swiped a utility vehicle driving in the opposite direction at around 6:50 a.m. on Aug. 5, Upson County Sheriff Dan Kilgore told McClatchy News. Upson County is about 65 miles south of Atlanta.

The bus veered off the road into a ditch, Kilgore said.

The driver, a 69-year-old man whose identity is being withheld until his family is notified, died, and two of the children suffered minor injuries, he said.

The students were taken to a local hospital by ambulance, according to a statement from Thomaston-Upson Schools.

“Our hearts go out to our bus driver’s family and to his friends and co-workers at the Thomaston-Upson Transportation Department,” the statement says.

No one in the utility truck was injured, Kilgore said.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.
