8-year-old shot in the head at fundraiser outside California family’s home, cops say
An 8-year-old girl was shot in the head outside her home in California, police told local media. One other person was also wounded.
The child suffered critical injuries, but survived, NBC Los Angeles reported. Her grandmother told the outlet that she had been shot in the face and neck, which “shattered her veins, her nerves, all that stuff.”
Police responded to the incident on July 22 at 8:49 p.m. in San Bernadino, The Sun reported, citing a July 26 news release from the San Bernardino Police Department. Upon arriving, officers found the other person who had been injured, according to the outlet.
The other victim, an adult, had injuries that were determined to be non life-threatening, KTLA reported. The suspect in the shooting fled before police arrived, the outlet reported.
The young girl is now alert and talking, NBC Los Angeles reported. At the time of the shooting, her family was hosting a fundraiser to pay for the funeral expenses of a teenage family member who had recently been killed in a car accident, the outlet reported.
Detectives said they’re still trying to determine if the shooting happened inside or outside the home, The Sun reported.
“All I remember was blood, because I say I was in shock,” the girl’s grandmother told NBC Los Angeles. “I know when that happened my granddaughter was scared. She couldn’t defend herself. No one could do anything.”
San Bernardino police did not immediately respond to a request for comment from McClatchy News.
