Security guard brought to tears at Kendrick Lamar show. Here’s how the rapper reacted
A security guard being brought to tears at a Kendrick Lamar concert in Houston, Texas, has captivated TikTok, and now the famed rapper has responded.
The TikTok video shared by Dejaih Smith shows Devyn Sanford wiping away tears as Lamar rapped “Love” during the Friday, July 22, show at the Toyota Center.
Sanford was working security at the venue and had his back turned to the rapper, but the song struck a chord for him.
“This song means EVERYTHING to me and I was feeling everybody around me emotions,” Sanford commented on the TikTok post, which has more than 11 million views as of July 27. “Definitely love getting paid to do this.”
Lamar also took notice, giving a shoutout to the security guard as he was interviewed after his weekend performance at Rolling Loud Miami.
“To see that — and shoutout to him, by the way — because I seen him, bro. I was like, man, I wonder what he going through?” Lamar told young reporter Jazlyn Guerra. But at the end of the day that’s how you want everybody to receive your music. And make them feel good, make them feel like it’s a moment they attached to. It can live forever.”
In his song “Love,” Lamar describes his feelings toward Whitney Alford, his fiancée and former high school sweetheart.
Sanford told KRIV he was overcome with emotions when the song was performed, as it reminded him of difficult times he had in 2017, when the song was released.
