A hiker fell and tumbled at least 150 feet into a gorge at a New York state park, officials said.

The hiker was walking in Letchworth State Park on June 20, the New York State Park Police said. At about 9:45 p.m., he called police for help after falling into a gorge.

Rescuers rushed to help the hiker. They made contact with the man and started rescue operations.

Rope helped save the hiker, police said. Rescuers rappelled into the gorge to get to the hiker, police said.

“The subject was located 150-200ft down into the gorge,” police said in a June 21 statement. “He was successfully extracted via rope rescue operations, and evaluated by medical personnel for injuries sustained.”

The hiker, who was not identified by police, had minor injuries and was cited. Officials did not publicly say what he was cited for.
