Man brutally attacked by three neighborhood dogs dies days after amputations in Texas
A man who needed multiple amputations has died 10 days after a vicious attack by three neighborhood dogs.
The mauling happened June 9 in Huffman, about 30 miles northeast of Houston, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. Nicolas Vasquez was initially listed in critical condition before family members said he died June 19.
Calvin Stoy, Vasquez’ neighbor, heard the attack and had to fight the dogs off Vasquez.
“Both legs were torn up bad, hands and arms,” Stoy told KTRK. “He had bites on his head. He was in really bad shape. He lost a lot of blood.”
Vasquez had to have his legs and an arm amputated following the attack, his niece told KRIV.
“This man was simply minding his own business walking to the store,” said Nicki Edwardson, who posted on Facebook on behalf of Vasquez’ family. “Something he should have been able to do safely.”
Before he died, Vasquez suffered organ failure and was waiting for a liver transplant, according to a GoFundMe. He was on life support in the hospital.
The three dogs are pit bull-terrier mixes, KTRK reported, and they have been taken by animal control. KRIV said they belong to multiple owners in the neighborhood.
As deputies investigate the attack, Gonzalez encouraged residents to contact the sheriff’s office if they had any interaction with the dogs or the owners.
“I just want justice from the law,” Vasquez’ sister-in-law, Maria Castillo, told KRIV. “This shouldn’t have happened. He was a nice person to everybody. Everybody knew him.”
