UPDATE: Some information in this story was changed on June 28 to reflect changes in the news release from the Utah Department of Public Safety.
Two parents died in a crash about 15 miles from Zion National Park while on vacation with their children, Utah police said.
The family was traveling on Kolob Terrace Road at the intersection of Highway 9 on June 5, the Utah Department of Public Safety said. The family was likely on vacation from out-of-state, officials said.
“The driver of the SUV stopped for the stop sign at the intersection, then for reasons still unknown, pulled out onto Highway 9 in front of a westbound tour bus,” officials said in a news release.
The tour bus driver couldn’t avoid the SUV and T-boned the side of the vehicle, officials said.
The man and woman, who were in the front seats of the SUV, were pronounced dead at the scene. Two children in the back seat of the SUV were taken to a hospital.
The girl in the backseat was ejected from the SUV and taken to a hospital by ambulance. The boy was taken to a hospital on a life flight helicopter, officials said. The Department of Public Safety did not disclose the children’s current conditions.
“The tour bus driver, the tour guide, and the passengers are cooperating with the investigation,” officials said. “Minor injuries were reported with the tour bus occupants.”
