A squatter is accused of breeding dogs in the “dilapidated basement of a once shining mansion” that is now abandoned in New Jersey, a rescue group says.

A total of 19 dogs, including German shepherds three Doberman pinschers, were rescued by animal control officers after being bred in “horrendous conditions” at the foreclosed home in Paterson, according to a Facebook post from the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge.

The squatter, who police believe to be a repeat dog breeding offender who was living in the rundown property, fled with at least one puppy, the shelter says. The dogs saved range from “young adults to seniors.”

McClatchy News has contacted Paterson police for more information.

“Just a day ago, these 19 dogs were living in filth and squalor with the sole purpose of breeding,” the post reads. “Today, they have a new lease on life, with thanks to rescue.”

The shelter says several of the dogs, described as “weak and malnourished,” were kept stuffed in cages that showed “evidence of dogs digging to escape.” .

Additionally, “feces covered the entire house, even the walls,” the shelter says.

Officials are investigating whether these dogs are related to other German shepherds that were recently rescued after being found “abandoned throughout New Jersey and New York,” according to the group.

“The public needs to be aware of where they are ‘adopting’ their pets from, and acknowledge the mothers, fathers and dogs left behind when they bring home their shiny new puppy.”

At least three of the dogs rescued on May 24, named Rose, Iris and Lily, still need adopting as of May 26, another post says.

Those interested in adoption can contact adoptlove@rbari.org or fill out an application at rbari.org.

Paterson is roughly 70 miles northeast of Trenton.
