A fisherman alerted rescuers to a man found clinging halfway down a 500-foot cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean in California, officials reported.

A California Highway Patrol helicopter airlifted the man to safety at 5:10 p.m. Thursday, May 19, from a cliff near Mussel Rock in Daly City in the San Francisco Bay Area, a video shows.

A passing fisherman reported the stranded man to Daly City firefighters, who requested the CHP’s help in extricating him from the cliff, a Facebook post with the video said.

Firefighters had been unable to find the man, the release said.

Despite “challenging winds,” the helicopter spotted the man and lowered a rescuer to him, CHP officers said. The crew then hoisted both men back up to the helicopter.

Video shows the rescuer placing a rescue harness on the man before the helicopter lifts them both off the cliff and the ocean surf far below.

The CHP post did not say how the shirtless man became stranded or provide information on his medical condition.

Daly City is a community of more than 104,000 people south of San Francisco.
