Newborn foal mysteriously dies while walking with parents on Outer Banks, group says
A newborn foal mysteriously died along the coast of the Outer Banks in North Carolina, a horse protection group announced.
Charlie, a wild colt born on March 25, was walking near the fire station in Carova on April 13, the Corolla Wild Horse Fund said in a statement on Facebook.
The group used security cameras to watch Charlie, his parents and his brother walk by the station around 4:13 p.m..
“He seemed completely fine, walking right next to his mom,” the group wrote on Facebook. “At 4:19 he laid down, and by 4:30 he had passed away.”
The fund said they don’t know why the foal died.
“His parents and brother are fine and behaving normally, though of course were very distressed by his sudden loss,” the group said on Facebook.
Charlie’s body will be taken to a state lab in Raleigh for a necropsy to determine a cause of death, according to the fund.
“We are so deeply grateful to everyone who helped us this afternoon. Thank you for being there for us, and for Charlie,” the group said.
Charlie was the first foal born this season, according to the fund.
If you see a sick or injured horse, contact the fund at 252-453-8002 and do not approach the animal, the group said on their website.
Carova is about 245 miles northeast of Raleigh.
