$2,000 GE refrigerators have been recalled after some caused ‘serious fall injuries’
A refrigerator, being rather immobile, shouldn’t put a user at risk of a fall. That’s why GE Appliances recalled about 157,300 GE free-standing French Door Refrigerators made with fingerprint resistant stainless steel in the United States and Canada.
The exact problem, as stated in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice Thursday: “The freezer handle can detach when a consumer tries to open the freezer drawer, posing a fall hazard to the consumer.”
The recall notice says GE Appliances has received “71 reports of the freezer drawer handle detaching, resulting in 37 reported injuries, including three serious fall injuries.”
This covers model Nos. GFE26JYMKFFS, GFE26JYMNFFSGNE27EYMKFFS, GNE27EYMNFFS, GNE27JYMKFFS, and GNE27JYMNFFS with serial numbers that start with DR, FR, GR, HR, LR, MR, RR, SR, TR, VR, ZR, AS, DS, FS, GS, HS, LS or MS.
The refrigerators are 36 inches wide and were sold in Home Depot, Lowes, Best Buy and other appliance stores for $1,900 to $2,500 each from February 2020 through August 2021.
If you have one of these models, reach out to GE Appliances to schedule a free replacement of the handle-mounting fasteners and re-installation of the handle.
To schedule this or if you’re unsure whether or not your refrigerator is involved in this recall, contact GE Appliances either online (at https://www.geappliances.com/ge/recall/bottom-freezer-refrigerator-2022/ ) or at 888-345-4671, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time.
