Watch California singer give ‘a lot of spice’ in sing-off to advance on ‘American Idol’
A California singer advanced on “American Idol” — but only after she competed in a sing-off.
Ava Maybee earned a spot in the top 24 after she went up against fellow contestant Yoli Mayor.
“You both have a lot of spice and life in your voices,” celebrity judge Katy Perry said on the Monday, April 4, episode. “Because your voices are alto, they’re unique. But the growth is real for both of you.”
Maybee, a 20-year-old college student from Los Angeles, impressed the judges with her voice and fashion sense on her audition for the show, McClatchy News reported. Before her second time on stage, Maybee revealed she was the daughter of Chad Smith, a drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
“I like to keep my music separate from my dad cause it’s really important for me to make it on my own,” she said on the show. “So, I’m here doing it by myself and I’m just so excited to be here.”
This time around, the celebrity judges challenged Maybee with the first “on the spot” sing-off. She went head-to-head with Mayor, a musician from Miami.
“You guys both have some similar vibes,” Perry said before the two took the stage.
Maybee sang “Roxanne” by The Police, which she had previously performed on the show. She’s moving forward in the competition after Perry said she and fellow judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie had a difficult decision.
“They’re both good but Ava’s to me a little bit more marketable — (her) voice sound,” Perry said before the emotional announcement.
The night that the episode aired, Maybee took to Instagram and wrote: “I MADE IT TO THE TOP 24!!!!!! OH MY GOD. thank you so so so much to @americanidol @katyperry @lionelrichie and @lukebryan I have met so many amazing friends and artists on this journey and I can’t believe it’s not over yet!”
