This dog breed is named most popular in the US — again. Which others made the list?
Dog lovers can’t get enough of one breed — helping it remain the most popular in the nation for another straight year.
Labrador retrievers again top the list of furry friends registered with the American Kennel Club, according to figures shared March 15.
“The Labrador Retriever was the most popular dog breed in the United States in 2021 — for the 31st year in a row, no less,” the club said in a news release. “(It usurped the Cocker Spaniel in 1991, and hasn’t let go of the No. 1 spot since.)”
These days, cocker spaniels are much lower on the list, coming in at No. 29.
So, what other types of pups currently rank among the most popular? Here are the breeds that round out the top five:
- French bulldogs
- Golden retrievers
- German shepherds
- Poodles
Of the 197 dog breeds considered, the American Kennel Club said fans give labs praise for their “versatility and temperament.”
“If I want to go for a hike, run, swim, play ball, or hunt, they are up and ready to go,” judge Judy Heim of California said in a post on the club’s website. “However, if I want to stay home and eat a gallon of ice cream, watch the Super Bowl, or [watch a] movie, they are thrilled to hang right there, too. Consequently, this makes the Lab an excellent service dog.”
