A woman was thrown down a flight of stairs by a stranger after she was leaving a light rail in Washington, police said.

Alexander Jay, 40, was arrested on March 3 and charged with second-degree assault. He attacked the woman at the Union Station in Seattle the day before, police said in a probable cause statement.

The woman was walking up a flight of stairs out of the station after leaving a light rail car, police said.

Jay was standing at the top of a flight of stairs when he grabbed the woman and threw her down the steps, police said.

He followed her to where she landed and threw her farther down the stairs, police said.

She clung to the railing and fought back as he tried to throw her down a third time, police said.

Then police said he kicked her in the face.

The woman held onto the railing and made her way down the stairs, police said, until a security officer came to help.

The attack left the woman with a broken collarbone and three broken ribs, which required her to have surgery, police said.

She had been riding the light rail to work and was on the same train as Jay before he assaulted her, police said. The two didn’t interact in the light rail train car, police said.

Police arrested Jay a day after the attack about half a mile away from the station.

Prosecutors asked the judge to set his bail at $150,000, according to charging documents.

His next court hearing is March 24 at 8:30 a.m.
