Man walking outside safety railing falls to death at canyon overlook, AZ officials say

A tourist was seen walking outside a safety railing at a popular canyon overlook before he fell to his death, Arizona officials said.

Seyedamirhossein Mirhosseininiri, a 29-year-old from Bothell, Washington, fell into Glen Canyon in Arizona on Feb. 14, the National Park Service said.

He was at the Horseshoe Bend at the time, a popular canyon overlook that’s become one of the most recognized places in the area.

“Witnesses reported an adult male was outside the safety railing among a dispersed crowd and had fallen off the cliff’s edge and into the canyon below,” park rangers said in a March 2 news release. “Classic Air Medical performed a search at the bottom of the canyon.”

A medical helicopter found Mirhosseininiri’s body at the bottom of the canyon. His body was taken to a county medical examiner in Flagstaff.

The incident is under investigation.

Horseshoe Bend Overlook has become a hot spot thanks to social media. Many people try to get the perfect shot from the 1,000-foot cliff.

“If visitors choose to leave the viewing platform they must remain vigilant to ensure their own safety and maintain awareness of their proximity to the cliff edge at all times,” park rangers said.
