A Hawaii man was rescued from an outcropping of rocks known as the “End of the World” on Jan. 9.

Witnesses said the man jumped into the water, but misjudged the circumstances and found himself unable to get out of the water along the shoreline, the Big Island Gazette reported.

The man, in his mid-30s, was able to make it onto an outcropping of rocks, where he was stranded, KHON2 reported. From there, he was rescued by firefighters in a helicopter, the outlet said.

The “End of the World” is an area where swimmers are allowed to jump into the water, according to the Outdoor Project. But the cliffs can be 30 to 35 feet high, and the only way to get back up is by climbing a cliff — an effort that could be thwarted by waves, the website said.

The Hawaii Fire Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from McClatchy News on Jan. 10.
