Officials are investigating after nearly 600 Amazon packages were found dumped in Oklahoma by an unknown person, deputies say.

The packages were found dumped in a rural area of Oklahoma County, about 30 miles northeast of downtown Oklahoma City. Deputies with the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office said in a Jan. 3 news release that someone removed items they wanted from the packages and discarded the rest.

“Apparently the thief isn’t much of a reader,” the sheriff’s office said. “The books that were being delivered were left behind.”

The packages left the Amazon facility, tracking information shows, and were being taken to a United States Postal Service office, the sheriff’s office said.

Those packages never arrived, deputies say, but those who are missing items are encouraged to not contact the sheriff’s office.

“We are working with the USPS and have reached out to Amazon, so someone should contact you soon,” the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies did not say if they have a suspect in the incident. Amazon did not immediately respond to comment from McClatchy News.
