Toddler dies after wandering away from home on stormy afternoon, Georgia deputies say
A toddler died after wandering from a Georgia home on an afternoon of heavy rain, multiple news outlets reported.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office said deputies went to a home where they received reports of a boy who had gone missing on Thursday, Nov. 11, according to WGCL.
One of his family members soon found him near a storm drainage ditch, WSB-TV reported.
The boy was taken to a hospital, where officials said he was pronounced dead.
Deputies said the 1-year-old, who wasn’t identified in news reports, had been outside his great-grandparents’ house when he wandered off. It happened along Stripling Chapel Road, close to U.S. Highway 27 and roughly 50 miles west of Atlanta, according to officials.
The child “fell into a sewage pipe” and couldn’t be revived, the sheriff’s office said in an emailed statement. The incident was under investigation as of Nov. 12.
Showers and storms had been forecast to hit the region on Nov. 11. In nearby Atlanta, the National Weather Service said nearly three-quarters of an inch of rain fell throughout the day.
