Man was shot dozens of times — and 2 officers have been indicted, Georgia records show
Two officers have been indicted more than five years after a man was shot dozens of times inside a Georgia home, records show.
Jamarion Robinson, 26, was in an East Point apartment when a task force reportedly attempted to serve warrants in 2016. When officials went inside, the city’s police department said Robinson fired a shot, according to The Atlanta-Journal Constitution.
Law enforcement agents returned fire and shot Robinson 59 times, “leaving him with 76 gunshot wounds,” according to a medical examiner’s report obtained by WXIA. Video from the scene of the Atlanta-area shooting captured gunfire that lasted almost three minutes, according to the TV station.
Robinson, a former college football player who had schizophrenia, died inside the apartment, news outlets reported.
Now, officials say a U.S. Marshal and Clayton County police officer were indicted this week in connection with the case. News reports didn’t list attorney information for the officers, and a representative from the county didn’t immediately respond to McClatchy News’ requests for comment on Wednesday.
“We take seriously any allegation of misconduct by our personnel,” the U.S. Marshals Service said Friday in an emailed statement. “Heinze will be placed on administrative duty until the matter before Fulton County Court is resolved. This indictment represents the first time in more than a decade that a deputy US Marshal has been criminally charged for discharging a firearm as part of on-duty conduct.”
The two indicted officers were identified in news reports as Eric Heinze, an “assistant chief inspector with the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force,” and Kristopher Hutchens, who officials said was working on a U.S. Marshals task force when the shooting happened. A grand jury charged them with felony murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, first-degree burglary, making false statements and violation of oath by a public officer, Fulton County records show.
Robinson’s mother, Monteria Robinson, has long been seeking justice in the case, WAGA and other news outlets reported.
“They took my son’s life, so they need to feel what it feels like being taken away from their family,” his mother told WXIA. “All the hard work and effort I put in, I finally got the resolution that I wanted. Now, it’s on to the next phase of this.”
The East Point Police Department didn’t share additional information about the 2016 shooting with McClatchy News on Oct. 27. .
