Woman pronounced dead is found alive at funeral home, Michigan officials say

Funeral home staff in Michigan got quite the surprise when they discovered a woman who’d been pronounced dead was actually breathing, officials say.

Southfield Fire Department responded to a call about a non-responsive woman in Detroit around 7:35 a.m. Sunday, The Detroit News reported. Medics worked for half an hour to save her, but the woman showed “no signs of life,” fire officials told the outlet.

Officials differ on her age: Southfield Fire Department said she’s 20-years-old while Detroit officials said she’s 14, the outlet reported.

Eventually, first responders pronounced the woman dead and sent her medical data to the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office, per standard procedure, according to WXYZ.

The office, again, pronounced the woman dead before her family released her body to a funeral home, the outlet reported.

It was hours later when the staff at James H. Cole funeral home noticed something was not right — the woman was breathing, according to WXYZ.

Staff members noticed the woman’s chest was rising and falling and immediately called EMS, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Medics arrived and found the woman had “a heart rate of 80,” the Detroit News reported.

She was taken to the hospital for treatment, according to the Free Press.

Her condition since then has not been reported.

“In an effort to respect the privacy of her family, the Southfield Fire Department is not currently releasing personal information on the patient,” the agency said in a statement to WXYZ.

The funeral home told the Free Press that its “thoughts and prayers are with this young woman and her family.”

The Southfield Fire Department is investigating the incident, according to Detroit News.
