Pilot seen on video flying plane under Mackinac Bridge was ‘reckless,’ Michigan cops say

A “reckless” pilot was caught on video flying a plane under the Mackinac Bridge on a busy summer weekend, Michigan police say.

A U.S. Coast Guard crew on a small boat captured video as the airplane went under the bridge with hundreds of cars in June, according to the news release. The Coast Guard and Michigan State Police released the video on Wednesday.

“This was extremely reckless behavior on the part of the pilot, and it imperiled the safety of everyone on the bridge that day,” Michigan State Police Detective Sgt. Gary Demers said in the news release. “We hope that someone can come forward with information to help us make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

The private aircraft flew under the bridge about 2:50 p.m. Sunday, June 28, as many people were already traveling for the Fourth of July, police say.

The Coast Guard and state police are seeking photos, videos or other information.

The Mackinac Bridge spans the Straits of Mackinac that connect Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. It’s the fifth-longest suspension bridge in the world, according to the Mackinac Bridge Authority.

The clearance for ships at the midspan is 155 feet, officials say.
