8-year-old, mom and another relative found dead in swimming pool, New Jersey cops say

Three family members were found dead in a swimming pool Monday afternoon in New Jersey, police say.

East Brunswick police say an 8-year-old girl, her 32-year-old mom and a 62-year-old male relative are suspected of drowning while other family members were in the home, News 12 New Jersey reported. The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the case with police. The cause of death has not been announced.

“This is a devastating day for our entire community,” East Brunswick Police Chief Frank LoSacco told USA Today. “It is too early to determine exactly what happened.”

A neighbor who heard screaming in the family’s backyard called 911, believing someone had fallen, WABC reported. But police arrived to instead find the girl, woman and man dead in the pool. WABC identified the male relative as the girl’s grandfather.

The family had just moved to the home and serviced the pool, neighbors told News 12.

Neighbors say an electrician went to the home, but police have not commented on whether the family was electrocuted, WABC reported.

The Middlesex County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating the cause of death.

“There’s no words for that family,” neighbor Yamini Patel told WLNY. “It’s very sad.”
