Candy store thieves skip cash and go for sweets – then leave sugary trail, MI cops say

A newly-reopened candy store in Michigan was broken into overnight Thursday, the store owner said.

But instead of leaving with money or vandalizing the store, the thieves took candy from Tummy Ache Candy Store and left a trail behind them, said Starr Henning, the Bay City store’s owner.

Henning said her and her husband’s business just reopened Thursday following its coronavirus closure. But when she came back Friday morning, she found two windows broken and candy missing, she said.

Police were notified around 11 a.m. of the overnight break-in, MLive.com reported. Bay City is located near the base of Luke Huron, north of Saginaw. Police confirmed no money was taken.

Henning shared video on her store’s Facebook page of the store, showing areas where candy was taken. She said candy “trailed off back and around the candy store in the neighborhood.”

“There is too much candy for a young person to hide from mom and dad in the house,” she said. “Mom and dads, if you please be aware of what is in your home, and in your children’s pockets and your bedrooms, I’d appreciate it.”

Tummy Ache Candy Store has been in operation more than 19 years.

In 2016, when the store was celebrating its 15th anniversary, Henning told MLive.com, “It’s always a joy to watch the faces and hear the words when people come through the doors.”

If you have any information about the burglary, contact Bay City police at 989-892-8571.
